Volunteer needs
Clean Green Action needs volunteers for both in-person events and to work behind the scenes. There is a lot of flexibility in volunteering for CGA. Some things can be done from home, and a lot of what is needed requires a commitment of two hours or less. Here are some recent volunteer needs:

Our History
The idea of sustainability and environmentalism isn’t new to our community. The local grassroots environmental group, Clean Green Action was created in January 2008. Several residents saw an opportunity to focus on improving local recycling efforts to benefit both the environment and local businesses. So we held a public meeting to see if community members shared this interest. Twenty-two people showed up, including folks from municipalities, area businesses, organizations, high school students, as well as individuals who considered themselves ‘concerned citizens’.
The group agreed that recycling was important, but had other environmental priorities that they also wanted to work on. Thus, Clean Green Action was born! This citizen-led group now looks at specific ways to create a greener future for the South Wood County area.
Clean Green Action has both developed and supported many innovative programs throughout the years. As government agencies and other community groups adopted better practices, some programming evolved, as happened with Recycling Rangers. This project transitioned from a volunteer intensive effort to collect recyclables at community events to a lending closet for recycling receptacles. Some of the programs the group has supported include Glean Central Wisconsin (a farmers market gleaning program aimed at diverting unsold produce to area pantries instead of going to waste), Growing Friends Community Garden, and River Riders Bike Share. Many programs that Clean Green Action helped start are still going, but are now projects of other organizations. Every year members vote on which projects to keep, change, or drop as well as new projects to adopt. Every member of this organization has the opportunity to be a part of meaningful change to make their community cleaner, greener, and more welcoming.

- Help with highway cleanup. Twice per year, CGA volunteers pick up trash and recyclables along a stretch of Highway 13 South in Wisconsin Rapids. Usually, these cleanups take place in May and September.
- CGA members help manage various prairie areas within the city of Wisconsin Rapids as part of its Monarch & Pollinator Encouragement project. The prairie areas include Butterfly Hill, the Lincoln High School woodlot, the Monarch Way Station near McMillan Memorial Library, and the rain garden near City Hall. Volunteers are needed to plant seed and remove invasive plants at these sites as well as serve as native plant education ambassadors. We also need people to help us start plants that will eventually be transplanted in these locations.
- Behind the scenes help is often required to help promote events. This includes designing promotional flyers and handbills to advertise events, creating events on Facebook, posting events on community calendars, as well as distributing printed materials.
- CGA is also continuously sourcing people to serve in leadership positions, including on our board of directors, as project leaders, and we are looking for individuals who might be interested in one day serving as officers within the organization. This would involve more of a time commitment, but often only requires a couple hours each month.
